SPDSS Memorandum
Final
To: Ray Alvarado & Ray Bennett
From: LRE -Kara Sobieski & Erin Wilson
Subject: Task 76.8-2 -Create Filled Climate Station Scenario for the Arkansas and
Republican River Basins
Date: August 31, 2005
Introduction
This memorandum presents the general approach and results for the following portion of this
Task 76.8 subtask
• Create Statewide monthly filled Blaney-Griddle climate scenarios for the period 1950
through 2004
This memorandum documents the creation of the statewide filled Blaney-Griddle climate dataset.
These datasets are used to calculate Blaney-Griddle consumptive use values at climate stations.
In previous DSS efforts, monthly temperature and precipitation data were filled for key climate
stations in Water Divisions 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. An Arkansas Basin DSS, encompassing Water
Division 2, and a Republican River Basin DSS, encompassing Water Districts 65 and 49 in
Division 1, have not been developed. As scoped in Task 76.8 in the South Platte DSS, this
memorandum presents the general approach and results for the creating filled Arkansas and
Republic River Basin monthly climate datasets and required StateCU input files in support of
providing complete statewide monthly filled climate datasets. The filled datasets allow potential
crop consumptive use to be estimated at climate stations for each month over the period 1950
through 2004.
In accordance with the methods and techniques set forth in SPDSS Task 53.2, the following
subtasks were used to develop the monthly filled dataset:
1. Identify key long-term NOAA climate stations that adequately represent variations in
climate seen throughout the SPDSS study area.
2. Investigate and determine appropriate methods for filling missing monthly data.
3. Fill missing monthly climate data to support the estimation of historic crop consumptive
use using the Blaney-Griddle methodology.
4. Create other StateCU input files using StateDMl.
