Self-Supplied Industrial Water users Demand
Major industrial demands within the SPDSS study area not accounted for in municipal water user
demands include six power plants, the Coors brewery, and two ski areas, as summarized in
Table 5. A number of minor industrial demands were identified though a review of the
HydroBase (CO_20070701) water rights tabulation for water rights adjudicated for industrial use
only. These water rights are generally for small amounts and few diversion records are available
in HydroBase. Therefore, only the major self supplied industrial (SSI) water user demands listed
in Table 5 are considered in this effort.
Current demand data and CU rates for the power plants and Coors brewery were provided by the
operators for the SWSI effort. Additional historical demand data for these and other self-supplied
industrial users were gathered from discussions with power plant operators, ski resort operators
and Coors personnel.
Water demands for self-supplied industrial users totaled approximately 82,000 acre-feet per year
in 2000, as summarized in Table 5. Based on the dates these uses came on-line and the increases
in service areas/service capacities, the current self-supplied industrial water demands represent
about a 550 percent increase from 1950 and about a 380 percent increase from 1980. As data was
only provided on a decennial basis, the missing yearly demands were filled with TSTooI using
linear interpolation to provide a complete dataset of SSI water demands.
Table 5
Self-Supplied Industrial Water Demand Estimates
in the South Platte River Basin
Self-Supplied Industrial Water Demand (ac-ft/yr)
County Facility Start Date
1950 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000
Adams Cherokee Power Plant 1957 0 2,841 9,565 9,565 9,565 9,565
Boulder Valmont Power Plant before 1950 2,921 2,921 2,921 2,921 2,921 2,921
Boulder Eldora Ski Area early-1960s 0 0 --- --- --- 180
Clear Creek Loveland Ski Area 1968 0 0 10 30 70 120
Denver Arapahoe Power Plant before 1950 432 2,362 2,362 2,362 2,362 2,362
Jefferson Coors Brewery before 1950 9,100 --- 26,000 --- --- 52,448
Larimer Rawhide Power Plant 1984 0 0 0 0 5,150 5,150
Morgan Pawnee Power Plant 1982 0 0 0 0 5,921 5,921
Weld Fort St. Vrain Power Plant 1980 0 0 0 2,000 2,000 3,089
Total 12,453 8,124 40,858 16,878 27,989 81,756
Sources: (1), (2), (5), (8), (9) Xcel Energy power plant demand estimates provided by Xcel personnel (Don Halffield).
(3) Eldora Ski Area snowmaking demand estimate based on conversations with ski area operators (Brian Mahon)
(4) Loveland Ski Area (LSA) snowmaking demand estimates based on data from engineering reports, LSA records,
and acres under snowmaking (Mark Abrahamson, LSA)
(6) Coors Brewery unit demands for beer production have changed over time.
