data from 49 stations located throughout Colorado, of which 22 stations are located in or
adjacent to the SPDSS study area. See Figure 1 for a map of the CoAgMet climate stations in
the northeast portion of the state. The CoAgMet climate stations located in the SPDSS study
area and their respective periods of record are listed in Appendix A.
Stations in the network typically record temperature, vapor pressure, solar radiation, wind run,
precipitation and soil temperature parameters. The following procedure was followed to
download the climate data:
1. Go online to http://ccc.atmos.colostate.edu/~coa~met/
2. Click on the "Raw Data Access" link (Figure 2).
3. Select the Start Year, Start Month, and Start Day as 1991, January, O1 respectively.
4. Select the End Year, End Month and End Day as 2003, December, 31 respectively.
5. Select the first station to download, Akron (AKR02).
6. Check the Daily Data and the New Format toggles.
7. Submit the data query using the Select button (Figure 3).
8. Acomma-delimited text file will appear on the screen, which can then be copied into a
text editor, Microsoft Excel, or saved as a text file by clicking "Save As" from the File
menu, specifying a file path and name, selecting "Text File (*.txt)" for the file type and
saving the file.
9. Using the "Back" button on the Internet browser, return to the "Raw Data Access" page
and repeat steps 3 through 8 with the remainder of the desired stations to download.
Documentation regarding the daily data can be found on the Raw Data Access page via the "Raw
Data Documentation" link located near the top of the page. Alternative instructions are also
provided in the "Raw Data Documentation" regarding methods for data queries using script
language.
The downloaded file contains 25 parameters, beginning with the station ID, followed by 22 fields
of data as described in the "Raw Data Documentation", and ending with two fields not described
in the documentation. The climate data file includes several fields not required for CDSS, such
as measurement time stamps, soil temperature, etc. Following are the fields containing data
needed for the CDSS efforts and the units as downloaded.
Field Data Tyke Notes
0 Station ID Alphanumeric CoAgMet station identifier
3, 5 Temperature Maximum and minimum temperatures. Units are degrees Celsius
(C).
7 Vapor Pressure Units are kiloPascals (kPa).
12 Solar Radiation Units are MegaJoules per meter squared per day (Documentation
states units of kJ/m~/min but confirmed to be MJ/m~/day).
13 Wind Run Units are kilometers (Documentation states units of k/m but
confirmed to be kilometers).
14 Precipitation Units are millimeters (mm).
Per the CoAgMet typical station descriptions, the wind measurement is generally taken at a
height of 2 meters and the temperature measurements are generally taken at a height of 1.5
meters.
Task 53 1.doc 2 of 14 December 21, 2004
(Rev January 25, 2006)
