FLOOD INSURANCE STUDY 1.0 INTRODUCTION .. .. ~ . . 1.1 Purpose of Study The purpose of this Flood Insurance Study is to investigate the existence and severity of flood hazards in the unincorporated areas of Adams County, Colorado, and to aid in the administration of the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 and the Flood Disaster Protec- tion Act of 1973. Initial use of this information will be to convert Adams County to the regular program of flood insurance by the Federal Insurance Administration. Further use of the information will be made by local and regional planners in their efforts to promote sound land use and flood plain development. 1.2 Coordination Officials of the Adams County Planning corrnnission, the Colorado Highway Department, the Colorado Water Conservation Board, the Colorado Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, the U.S. Geolo- gical Survey, the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, the Denver Post newspaper, and local residents were contac'ted throughout this study; available maps, flood data, and historical informa1:ion were obtained. On November 11, 1975, a meeting with the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UD&FCD), the Colorado Water Conservation Board, and the Federal Insurance Administration was held to discuss dis- crepancies with the UD&FCD study on Big Dry Creek. The results of this meeting were to use the lOa-year profile and floodway developed by the UD&FCD, with the exception of the area around Interstate 25 which was adjusted to more accurately depict the 100~year flood. It was also decided at this meeting to delete the 50-year profile because of the closeness to the lOa-year profile" On October 23 and November 28, 1975, public hearings were held by the Adams County Planning Corrnnission to review the flood plains within the county. A final corrnnunity coordination meeting was held with the public and representatives from Gingery Associates, the Adams County Planning Corrnnission, the Urban Drainage and Flood Con- trol District, and the Federal Insurance Adminis1:ration on August 26, 1976, to present and discuss the. flood information prepared for the county. There were no problems raised at this meeting.
