3

"

-.

4

3.0

ENGINEERING METHODS

For flooding sources studied in detail in the county, standard hydrologic
and hydraulic study methods were used to determine the flood hazard data
required for this study. Flocds having recurrence intervals of 10, 50,
100, and 500 years have been selected as having special significance for
flood plain management and for flood insurance premium rates. The
analyses reported here reflect current conditions in the watersheds of
the streams.

3.1 Hydrologic Analyses

Hydrologic analyses were carried out to establish the peak discharge-
frequency relationships for floods of the selected recurrence
intervals for each stream segment studied in detail in the county.

Annual maximum peak flows for the 10-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year
floods on these streams studied by detailed methods were based on
records from the u.s. Geological Survey stream gaging stations given
in the following summary, and on the results of a regional peak-
flow, frequency analysis.

STREAM G~GING STATIONS

Station Name

Baldy Creek near New Castle
Battlement Creek near Grand Valley
Beaver Creek near Rifle
Canyon Creek above New Ca!,tle
Canyon Creek near New Castle
Colorado River at Glenwood Springs
Colorado River at New Cas1:1e
Colorado River below G1en~rood Springs
East Canyon Creek near Ne~l Castle
East Divide Creek near Silt
East Rifle Creek near Rifle
Elk Creek .at New Castle
Fourmile Creek near Carbondale
Parachute Creek at Grand Valley
Parachute Creek near Grand Valley
Possum Creek near New Cast:le
Roan Creek above Clear Creek
near DeBeque
Roan Creek near DeBeque
Roaring Fork River at Glenwood Springs
Rifle Creek near Rifle
West Fork Parachute Creek near
Grand Valley

8

Period of Record

1956-61
1957-65
1952':"present
1969-present
1955-60
1900-present
1966-72
1966-present
1969-present
1959-65
1936-43, 1956-64
1922-23, 1955-60
1942-47
1921-27, 1948-54
1948-54, 1964-70
1969-present

1962-68
1921-26, 1962-72
1906-09, 19l2, 1914-present
1939-46, 1952-64

1957-62
