Belo~~~ are comments from CBRT
members.
a. Address eater in land planning decisions. Historicalh~, water use has not addressed when
local land planning decisions are made, but Stan Cazier reconunended that this be done.
Lurline Curran seconded this recommendation.
b. Sa~-e agriculture. Many members noted that fixture municipal gowth. especiallti~ on the
Front Range, will be at the elpense of West Slope agriculhue unless something is done. The
roundtable consensus was that preserving West Slope agriculture was more important than
~~-~atering la~ens in new developments. Louis Meyer noted that more and more communities
are addressing ho~~~ to locall~~ gro~~~ the food theti~ consume. Land for agriculh~ral use and
«Tater to grow the foods should be preserved.
c. The Front Range should conser~~e more. Denver and other Front Range communities
should adopt practices to limit ~~ ater consumption. Dick Proctor noted that the aquifers
underl~-~ing Denver and along the Front Range are depleting. Las Vegas, Ne~~°ada, is buying
bluegrass back from landowners to conserve water.
d. Preser~-e prior appropriation sti~stem. Stan Cazier mentioned that ~~~hile fuh~re population
ga owth camlot be controlled, deciding where «,°ater comes ti om to support that growth can be
controlled. Representati~~°e Kathleen Cum- of Uunnison. ~~~ho represents Ulem~~ood Sprnigs,
is sponsoring a bill that would require all ne~~-~ deg elopments to prove they have an adequate
water supple as a condition of approval Caroline Bradford said the cost of water is not
limiting new development, noting that a new development with 1,700 projected homes in
Eagle County is paying ~ 100.000 per acre foot of «-ater. Therefore, cost coati-not be a
limiting factor in restricting future ~~~ater dig ersions.
