similar groups. However, there a~e some comparisons maeI" H. the study
in which the likelihood of biases du~ to lack of randomization may not
be very great. In any case, if a consistent result IS founri in a variety
of comparIsons, which have a sound physical basi s, then perhaps some
useful conclusions can be drawn.

A second factor relevant to the scope of research and evaluat i.)n
IS the limitations of available data. Because this was a first year
effort, the data base cannot be regarded as adequate (0 evaluate con-
clusively all aspects of the three basic physical hypotheses. On
the other hand, a number of important physical proce~c;f's and seedi ng
effects thereon can be examined and evaluated with data obtained during
the field program.

In the following section, this field program and thr- statistical
evaluation are summarized.

1.2 SUMMARY OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

1.2.1 Field research_ progra~~ According to the csn desi.?,:1 study,
an area in the '!y-alllu'- :1ountains_ east or Beaver, Utah, appears to be
representative of much of the l!tah weather modification treated area.
Also, accessibi 1 i ty was assessed to be favorable. Consequently, the
vicinity of Beaver and the mountains to the east was chosen as the
location for intensive data collection. The period of the field research
program was from February I to ~arch 31, 1981.

The strategy for collecting data was divided into two maIn parts.
In the first part. relatively short periods, four hours typically, were
selected for intensive data collection. During these periods all avail-
able measuring systems were operated according to predetermined methods.
In the second part, instruments capable of measuring and recording data
continuously were operated.

\{h i let h e de t a i Iso f d a t a c 0 I Ie c t ion act i vi tie s are g i v e n 1 n
Appendix A, only a summary wi 11 be provided here.
