INTRODUCTION TO VOLUME n

JI

The Sierra Ecology Project is a continuing study conducted as part of the SCPP (Sierra
Cooperative Pilot project), the Water and Power Resources Service's research program in cloud
seeding for precipitation increases in the Sierra Nevada. The goal of the pilot project is to deter-
mine whether cloud seeding can be a reliable alternative for supplementing the region's water
resources. The Sierra Ecology Project will help evaluate possible effects upon components of the
region's environment as a result of the multiyear pilot project.

,-I
..

The Sierra Ecology Project is directed by Dr. James L. Smith, Project Leader, Snow Zone
Hydrology, Sierra Nevada and Coast Ranges, California, Pacific Southwest Forest and Range
Experiment Station, Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Berkeley, California.
Under a Forest Service-Bureau of Reclamation (now Water and Power Resources Service) con-
tract, Dr. Smith organized and chaired the two workshops discussed in this volume of the report
series. Dr. Smith supervised the writing and editorial content of the reports. The findings of three
previous workshops on forest insects and diseases, vegetation, and deer herds and habitat in the
American River Basin were documented in Volume I of the Sierra Ecology Project report series.

These reports and future studies of the Sierra Ecology Project are published by the Service as
part of the environmental investigations budget of the Office of Atmospheric Resources Manage-
ment. Other volumes in this series include studies of the historic climatic regime in the Sierra
Nevada, snowpack simulation studies, a bibliography of the environmental effects of weather
modification, and an overview of environmental responses to weather modification as discussed
in documents pertaining to the subject.

,

:j
l

.,._. .._....--ii
