2. 1987 PIELD RESEARCH PROGRAM A.W. Huggins and A.B. Long (DR!)

The field research program was aimed at increasing our under-

standing of

1) the delivery of seeding material to clouds over

the Tushar Mtns, and 2) the physical characteristics of the clouds.
In order to reach these overall objectives and focus the field
effort, several experiments were defined.

a. Bxperimental approach
The study of the transport of cloud seeding material involved

P--
~r;; ",,- the
r'(tG
? \ q the

release of SF6 tracer material from ground locations upwind of

Tushar Mtns.

SF6 was then sampled using syringe devices at

surface sites in the valley near the mountains and in the mountains

themselves. Sampling was also done using an aircraft equipped with

a fast-response SF 6 analyzer.

Supporting rawinsonde data were

gathered during these studies. Risch et ale (1988) describe this

experiment and present the results of four separate experiments.

A summary of results is included in section 6.

The physics of clouds over the mountains was examined in

several ways. First, a steerab1e microwave radiometer located in

the mountains (Fig. 1) collected information on the spatial and
temporal distribution of supercooled liquid water. The temperature
of the liquid water is inferred from 1idar observations of the

clouds and rawinsonde data.

The results of these liquid water

studies for all 1987 STORMS are presented in section 4.

Second, an assessment is made, on the basis of 1idar and
surface microphysics data, of the microphysical processes respon-
sible for precipitation particle growth.
