Universi:ty Affairs grant number NGL-06-003-200 is providing an important
contribution to land-use policy making in the northern part of the mountains.
A further very important aspect has been the involvement of a significant
number of our graduate students in the San Juan Mountains. In addition
many high school and undergraduate students and junior college teachers
served as field assistants and research participants supported by a series
of National Science Foundation research participation projects. The long-
range value of introducing this group of high ability young people to both
the mountains and the project is inestimable; they in turn greatly assisted
the INSTAAR effort beyond the limits of contract funding.

National Forest Service personnel proved extremely helpful at all stages
of the field operations; special mention must be made of Karl Zeller, Bob
Newton and Robert Pizel.

Finally, INSTAAR' S staff has provided support in many phases of the work.
In particular ~~rtha Andrews' bibliographic assistance and librarianship,
Kathleen Salzberg's editorial assistance, and Connie Parsons' secretarial
help, are acknowledged while Carol Haverkampt, Ann Stites and Laura Osborn,
administrative assistants to the Director, provided extensive general
support. Technical typist Ruby Fulk has performed an exemplary task. Rolf
Kihl has perfolEed innumerable sedimentology analyses and Marilyn Joel did
the final drawings.

~1Y:~

Harold W.
