One short \\'3Ve in thc northern hranch of westerlies moved quickly through the Greal Basin
and was centered over Nevada by 1700 on 7 February, This wave advected some colder alT over
northern Utah, and the 700 mb temperature decreased )0 to - r by 0500 on 8 February. A second
short\wvc in the northern branch deepened and tended to merge with the trough to the south_ This
deepening left Utah near the center of the combined trough in an area of relatively light
southwesterly \'vinds at 0500 on 8 February. Both upper lever troughs passed the Utah research area
by 1700 on 8 February; the northern \I.'ave advanced eastward into Colorado and the Dakotas. while
the southern wave dropped souteashvard into Arizona This main trough passage veered winds over
