Rainfall was observed using Belfort recording weighing rain gages
with strip charts. These charts were manually checked and digitized by
the Colorado River Municipal Water District in Big Spring and were
processed and quality controlled at Texas Tech University (Jurica et
!l., 1981, 1982). Digital tapes of the final processed data with 15 min
time resolution and 0.25 mm (0.01 in) rainfall increments were then
entered in the Skywater EDN. These data were tabulated by station and
15 min intervals and 24 h station totals were plotted for each of the 60
field season days to detect any obvious errors. Only two events with
bad data were detected and corrected in the final data set which had

more than 700,000 rain gage reporting periods during the 1979 field
season. All kinematic objective analyses provided d~rect comparison

with rain gage using a 0.20 grid shown in Fig. 2.3.

33.6

33.1
33.2
33.0
c; 32.8
w
9
to- 32.6
a:
..J
32.1
32.2
32.0

.'
I

.!

- .

... i+
I
i +

;
~..

+ I +
I

i +

1- .. -. ..
; .... +

.. ~
~

+.
1"... .. ...

+;

.. r ; .." ::+:...+:
+ 1+ +1 - -.1- + t
- _+ I
+ ~..... lI-
i + t
+; I
! 1-

;.

. +
.. + I
... !

t +

... -i...

3'.8

102.6 102.1 102.2 '02.0 101.8 101.6 IC:.1 ,;):.2 101.0 100.8
LONG lDEG I

"'ID S'ZE: 111:5 LlITJ - D.2D

Fig. 2.3 Objective analysis grid and rain gage network used in mesoscale
kinematic analyses.
