CHAPISR III. STATISTICAL DESIGX

A. Basi~ (~~ra~teristics of the ~xperimental Design

St~ti&ti~~t evalu~tions basec on a sound experiment~l design are

s~llent features of a preci?itation aug=ent~tion and =anagement ?roject.
The b~si~ characteristics of the ex?eri=ental design are;
1. Rando~iz2tion ~ill ~e e=?loyed to obtain seeded and ncn-seeded
d~ta.

2. Randomization will be based on a single year at a ti=e. A
minimum of five years data will be needed to deterzine statistical
s1gnifl~an~e.

3. The eXDeri~ental time unit is__?A__hQurs and shall begin and

. ,
,

end ~t 0900 a.~. This time unit will allow good working relation-
ships with government support agencies (C. s. ~eather Bureau,

Sull Conservati03 Service and the Forest Service) and also mininize

diurnal effect on precipitation measure~ents.
4, Meteorological variables will be measured each day throughout
the e~peri~ental period.
The statistical ~odel ~sec on this ?roject will be the =odel develo?ec
by Colorado St~te UVlversity (1966j. This ~odel can be =odifiea to suit
the s?e~if1C target-~ontrol require=ents of this Project. The sp~cific

USE of this ~odel is to alLow an analysis of seather ~odification efforts
on a b~~in-wide scale inste~c of a s?ecific area scale. The basic ?rin-

ciples, OI the C01orado State University Randomized Statistical Model are
listed in Appendix A.
B. Pri~arY Objectives of the Statistical Evaluation
The primary objectives of the statistical evaluation will be directed
towards the following:
1. To deter3ine if there is an increase in the winter snow precip-

itation as a result of c-loud seeding operations in the Jemez and Sierra
Naciniento ~ountain Ranges. Ii so, what is its nagnitude?
2. To determine if there is an increase in the flows of the Jemez
Springs River as a result or cloud seeding in the watershed,
3~ To determine if secondary effects have been initiated "down
wind" from the cloud seeding operation in the target area.

-4-
