AIlSlAACT Laboratory tests were conducted with the Belfort Universal Recording <br />Raingage to provide information on the instruments I response and accuracy <br />with simulated light precipitation rates. Such rates are characteristic of many <br />snowfalls in the Rocky Mountains, and are of particular interest in evaluation <br />of winter weather modification programs in that region. <br />Simulated precipitation rates in the approximate range 0.01 to 0.10 inch <br />per hour were provided by gravity feed through medical intravenous (IV) units. <br />The flow rates were monitored before and after each test of one to three hours <br />duration by interception and weighing. The total daily simulated precipitation <br />amount was intercepted by a beaker in the gage bucket for later weighing. Gage <br />chart records were carefully reduced for comparison with the simulated precipi~ <br />tation. <br />Results indicate that over periods of several hours the gage chart traces <br />generally lagged the simulated precipitation. However, this lag in indicated <br />amount averaged only approximately 0.02 inch and was seldom greater than 0.03 <br />inch. For periods of one to three hours, over half the cases had a chart <br />response within ~ 10 percent of the simulated precipitation amount.
