There are many different pur-
poses for modifying the weather

A

Increasing or decreasing rain and snow in a location
Reducing damage to crops and property from hailstorms
Reducing the number of forest fires that are started by lightning
. Removing fog at arrports so that planes may safely land and take
off

Changing the climate of a location

Changing the intensity and direction of hurricanes so that they
cause less destruction .

the

and

Varying degrees of success have been achieved in each of these
areas, but in general modern technology has developed the
science of intentional weather modification so that extensive
operations will be possible in the next few years.
Most of these effects are achieved by seeding clouds with
appropriate materials. The weather conditions at the time the
clouds are seeded, the manner in which they are seeded, and the
effects of the seeding are so different that weather modification
is not one but several technical practices.
At the same time that people are working hard to learn
how to modify the weather, some of man's activities are causing

3

./

thunderstorms

severe

of

destructiveness

Reducing
tornadoes

.~
nJ'
. ._~
~ ~
" I
~:.." ,,\ I
.. .; ~,
'BOUND .'
