<br />FOREWORD <br /> <br />\0..;,' <br /> <br />The South Dakota Legislature approved the formation of the <br />Office of the Director and the Division of Weather Modifica- <br />tion in 1971 based on results of numerous research efforts. <br />In 1972 the Legislature approved the initial operational <br />funding of $250,000, followed by $643,000 in 1973 and <br />$803,000 in 1974. <br /> <br />The third operational year has been successfully completed. <br />The Division of Weather Modification is pleased to report <br />that analysis of data indi~ates the program has produced <br />more rain and reduced hail damage in counties which partic- <br />ipated in the program. <br /> <br />The staff of the DWM is intimat4~ly aware that the Great <br />Plains States are suffering from an abnormally dry period. <br />It firmly believes that the rain increase and hail suppres- <br />sion efforts are providing positive, beneficial results to <br />the State of South Dakota. <br /> <br />This brochure has been prepared to answer questions most <br />often asked of staff as they meet the public around South <br />Dakota. It is not intended to provide extensive technical <br />data.
