BENEFITS

Research at South Dakota State University has involved an
extensive study of potential crop yield i,ncreases from an
additional inch of rainfall during an average growing sea-
son.

ESTIMATED YIELD INCREASES OF
MAJOR CROPS IN SOUTH DAKOTA
DUE TO AN ADDITIONAL INCH
OF PRECIPITATION

Data from
SDSU Report

CROP

Corn (Grain)
Corn (Silage)
Spring Wheat
Winter Wheat
Rye
Oats
Barley
Alfalfa
Soybeans
Flax
Native Hay
Pasture

Range of Yields Possible
Low High

2
600
1
1
1
1
.1
100
1
1
100
50

8 Bu/ Acrle
2400 Lbs/Ac:re
5 Bu/Acre
5 Bu/ Acr4~
5 Bu/Acrl~
5 Bu/ Acr<<~
5 Bu/ Acr<<~
1000 Lbs/Acre
5 Bu/ AcrEl
3 Bu/Acre
500 Lbs/Acl'e
200 Lbs/ ACl'e

Better yields translate into increased profits as shown
from their studies of four farms in southeastern South
Dakota.

Tota1 Crop Number of Increa.sle in
Acres Beef Cows Income pn $)
Farm A 633 4S 1, 77:
Data from
SDSU Report Farm B 456 49 2, on
Farm C 692 30 1,955
Farm D 560 90 1,398

A study of agriculture for the ninth Crop Reporting
District (Bon Homme, Charles Mix,. Clay, Douglas, Hutch-
inson, Lincoln, Turner, Union and Yankton counties)
produced results which showed that an additional inch
of growing season rainfall would increase farm profits
about $12.3 million depending on prices, elasticity of
demand, and timeliness and ampunt of rainfall.

Every dollar generated by agriculture in turn generates
nearly three additional dollars as it changes hands from
the farmer to the machine dealer, from the machine dealer
to the grocer, etc.

11
