The 'silver'i~dide is first vaporized, then
cooled rapidly, or quenched, as it mixes into the surrounding air.
This transforms the vapor into solid smoke particles without going
through the liquid state. Storm winds blowing up the mountain slopes
are depended upon to distribute these artificial ice nuclei up into the
clouds where they transform supercooled liquid cloud droplets into ice
particles that grow rapidly, becoming snowflakes that descend to the
ground. In many clouds there is a dearth of natural ice nuclei.

(Photography for the cover picture by Bob Pauline of the Bureau of
Reclamation.)

PREPARED FOR: DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION

DIVISION OF ATMOSPHERIC WATER
RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

UNDER: CONTRACT NO. 14.06-D-7332

-~.;,

t
I,

~
~l.~
