,

~

i

The Delta System demonstrated the feasibility of
low-cost, real-time canal automation and the need
to have the water users intimately involved.

Richfield Irrigation Company. During 1993, a real-time monitoring station was placed on
the parshall flume at the head of the Richfield Canal. This allowed the canal managl~r to
improve system operation. After a year of monitoring canal flows, the company decided to
upgrade to real-time control.

During the early Spring of 1994, the telemetry equipment and datalogger/controller were
moved 200 feet from the parshall flume to the headworks. The gates on the diversion
structure were motorized (with solar-powered DC motors) and the datalogger/controller was
reprogrammed for remote control (See Photograph Nos. 3, 4, and 5). This new system has
proved to be a very useful water conservation tool. During the summer of 1994, two
additional canal monitoring stations will be added.

7
