.;.

e

.

Expandability. For many applications, the utilization of real-time technology will be
evolutionary (See Figure 2): starting with straight forward monitoring systems and then
evolving into more complex automation applications. Realizing this process is evolutionary
is important because as the real-time technologies evolve, so will the water users intc~rest.
As interests evolve, it is also important that new expensive equipment not be required for
each expansion.

"'.,........"..HH.~
...:...:.'...~~~~?#~....:..,:..:: ~

"H"'~
:je"'o~.,CJ~~~..: ~

........'..'.1.....
. .. . ... ."'" .... -. .. . .
. ,........... -,.... PRO is currently developing modular systems which stretch from the farm
up to the watershed (cooperators in parenthesis).

On-farm Module - (Soil Conservation Service/Utah Climate Center)
Canal Module - (DO/USU)
Reservoir/EWS Module - (Regional Office)
Cloudseeding - (DO/Utah Climate Center)
Water Quality Module - (Regional Office/DO)
Groundwater Module - (Unknown)

This allows water user groups to mix and match depending on their needs.

Get Water Users Intimately Involved with Installation: Where possible, the water user
groups, WCDs, etc., which sponsor a project, are encouraged to get intimately involved with
installation of equipment. This has occurred to an impressive degree with three recent
studies: (1) Low-end Adaptive Canal Automation (USU's Delta Project); (2) Emery County
Measurement and Control; and (3) Automated, High-elevation c1oudseeding.

Make Man/Machine Interface Friendly: Make all hardware and software as user friendly
and responsive to needs as possible. This is one area where we need to make dramatic
improvements.

Monitor Service to Customer: PRO has contracted with the DO to monitor all technology
transfer efforts and make recommendations concerning appropriateness of technologY:1 PRO
efforts, and sustainability.

5
