"' ...
.

.,

The Bear River System will demonstrate
that real-time technologies are useful
on Wildlife projects.

Strawberry Hi~hline Canal. This project was one of Reclamation's earliest. 'The
Highline canal was constructed in the late 1910's and early 1920's, and, in many respect, has
changed little since construction. The canal company would like to modernize, but i:s
struggling. A real-time canal monitoring and control project would seem to be the answer.

This irrigation season, DO, PRO, and the canal company have been evaluating a pneumatic
gate as a possible replacement for stoplog structures (See Photograph Nos. 8 and 9). A
bladder, which is filled by a DC air compressor, moves the gate up and down to maintain a
constant elevation behind the structure. The pneumatic technology, when integrated into a
rea1~time control system, seems to have great potential.

14
