Flight Areas
00 Rain Gages

Figure 2. - Facility locations, target areas and rain gage network.

During the active portion of the day, significant radar
echoes were mapped from the scope at intervals of 15
to 20 minutes, providing a record of echo and movement
growth for later analysis. Figures 4 (a)-(d) are a sample
sequence of these maps, showing how the development
and movement of shower groups could be followed and
the aircraft directed accordingly. These maps, together
with the observations made by the Commission's
network of rain gages and printouts from the onboard
instrumentation systems on the airplanes, comprised

6

.J

\

'I

100 om (DME)

.~

~

50 om (DME)

/ ~ACIFIC

the data base for assessment of program results.

Operational missions tended to follow natural ups and
downs of the local weather, which divided the period
into rainy episodes separated by relatively dry condi-
tions. These episodes, lasting from 4 to 8 days,
corresponded to the passage of disturbed portions of
the intertropical convergence belt. Fourteen episodes
were recognizable during the course of the operational
period.
