"',

..,.

. ~

.

.

.

3,3

six inches or more of snowfall at the sampling sites, Five sampling
expeditions have been assumed in developing the budget, If the number
of expeditions has been less than five on 9 January 1987, DRI will
continue this sampling effort provided a coordinated seeding program
is maintained by the BuRec, The snowpack sampling will be accom-
plished in the manner of Stone and Warburton (1981), The snowfall
will be sampled at 12 sites (see Table 1), Nine of the sites are
remote and will be visited by helicopter, In line with previous dis-
cussions with BuRec personnel it is assumed that the cost of providing
this helicopter support will be paid directly by the BuRec, Three of
the 12 sites will be adjacent to all~eather highways accessible by
4-wheel drive vehicles followed by over-snow travel, The profiling
equipment to be used has been described previously (Stone, 1983), and
provides a 2 em depth resolution of the snowpack. All the sampling
will be done as soon as possible after storms in order to minimize
the effects of snowpack settling, Sampling immediately after a storm
results in better depth- and thus time-resolution of the snowpack and
this improves the chemical analysis,

B. Laboratory Analyses and Data Processing:

The laboratory silver analyses of the snow samples will be con-
ducted continually throughout the project to ensure a timely reporting
of the results, The analyses will be completed by about 30 April 1987,
The analyses will be made in the two DRI clean room laboratories in
Reno, One contains a laminar flow work station adjacent to a dual-
beam flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometer, This spectro-
photometer is housed in filtered Class 100 air and uses an automated
