~ ~
~

, ~

.

.

.

TASK III: SEEDING PROGRAM TARGETING EFFECTIVENESS

The emphasis of the 1986-87 SCPP field experiment is signifi-
cantly different from that of previous years, The emphasis is being
placed on a demonstration seeding program involving the coordination
of several agencies currently involved in ground-based seeding of
Sierra Nevada winter clouds, Each of the agencies uses a network of
ground-based silver iodide generators designed to target a relatively
small area, Because the various target areas are adjacent to each
other, cooperation of the agencies may result in overall program
improvements consistent with individual agency goals, For example,
generators in one of the areas may successfully target and seed
clouds in an adjacent area when the generators normally targeting
that adjacent area would be ineffective because of incorrect airflow.
The net effect of such a cooperative effort may be better seeding over
all the target areas summed together and taken as a whole,

The individual ground-based generator networks being used include
those operated by the Desert Research Institute (DRI), Sacramento Muni-
cipal utilities District (SMUD), and Pacific Gas and Electric Company
(PG&E), All of these generators are remotely controlled, These
generators will be further supplemented by the Bureau of Reclamation
with six manually-controlled generators, Through the coordinated
seeding effort this winter, the target area of the SCPP ground-based
seeding program has been expanded beyond the traditional American
River Basin to include the Truckee-Tahoe and Mokelumne watersheds,
Details of the experiment operations and goals are given in the SCPP
1986-87 Operations Plan,
