These variables can evolve in important ways because of
changes in the synoptic and mesoscale meteorological fields, A physi-
cal understanding will be developed of the relations involved, The
pattern of reflectivity factors seen in the time-height displays will
indicate the stratiform or convective nature of the clouds, whether
mesoscale structure may be present, and in some cases whether a
seeder-feeder process is operating, The magnitude of the equivalent
reflectivity factor will be an important physical indicator of the
efficiency of the cloud in producing precipitation particles especially
when there is simultaneous information on the amounts of supercooled
liquid water present, This simultaneous information will come from
the BuRec microwave radiometer located alongside the radar at Kingvale.
Concurrent measurement of ground microphysics data collected by the
BuRec, could lead to inferences regarding the type of precipitation
processes operating at that time. The Ka-band equivalent reflectivity
factors measured in the clouds overhead will allow some extension of
these inferences upward into the clouds themselves. The evolving
atmospheric kinematics and thermal and moisture stratifications as
derived from SCPP and other rawinsondes will be valuable in explaining
some of the changes observed in the equivalent reflectivity factors,
Finally, the radar data and visible and infrared satellite imagery
should prove to be useful for describing the evolving mesoscale struc-
ture of winter storms and its relation to microphysical phenomena,

Although a number of valuable studies of the radar data can be
made it is recognized that many of these will have to be deferred
because of the limited funding available, It is intended, however,
to hire a Ph,O, level radar meteorologist to carry out the radar data
analysis and interpretation, This position would be supported in part
by SCPP funds,
