<br />Cover Photo <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />This is an image of the propane dispenser at the northwest <br />end of a ,line ofthree high altitude dispensers used at the HAS <br />high altitude seeding location on the west slope of the <br />Wasatch Plateau. The view is across the Sanpete Valley <br />toward the San Pitch Mountains. The propane dispensers, <br />aligned across the prevailing southwest wind, were used <br />during the Utah 2003-2004 randomized cloud seeding <br />experiment. Horizontal separation between dispensers was <br />about 100 feet to reduce aggregation of seeded ice crystals. <br />The arms holding the two propane nozzles were also aliglll~d <br />across the prevailing southwest wind. Each nozzle had an <br />upwind circular shield to protect it from rime ice buildup. <br />Temperature sensors were immediately downwind of each <br />nozzle to verify propane release by its cooling effect to about <br />-100 deg F. The propane lines were insulated to prevent <br />premature vaporization of the liquid propane. All three <br />dispensers were controlled by a programmed data logger at <br />the central release site, at an elevation of8370 feet. Each <br />dispenser had two nozzles and each nozzle released propane <br />at a rate near 3.5 gallons per hour. <br />
