Growth Times

Ice particles which were sampled in a clean orographic system
with a well-defined upwind cloud edge, were appropriate in
size and shape for their growing conditions when compared to
the laboratory results. A crude model of this particular NW
flow cloud showed that if seeding had been effective
immediately at the upwind cloud edgE!, then there would be
sufficient time for crystals in the lower half of the cloud
to reach the ground before the strong subsidence region to
the lee of the Mesa.

Aspirator Intercomparison

A field intercomparison of two modes of using the (PMS 2D-C)
probe in a calm snowfall of dendrites and aggregates showed
that use of an aspirator resulted in 2.4 times the
cencentration recorded by the probe in horizontal (aircraft
style) orientation mounted on a moving truck. The
enhancement appeared to be similar at all sizes. The results
are not expected to apply to other habits like graupel.

27
