The cross hatching
indicates the location of the Atlas mountains.

Figure 2

Synoptic surface analysis for December 7(a), 8(b), and 9(c) at 1200 GMT.

Figure 3 Visible satellite photographs at 1230 GMT on December 8(a) and on
December 9(b).

Figure 4

Soundings from Beni Mellal on December 8(a) and 9(b) at 1200 GMT.

Figure 5 Time series of microphysical data collected by the UND Citation aircraft
on December 8, 1985 between 1140 and 1145 GMT. Top panel gives the cumulative
concentration of particles greater than 250 microns in diameter as measured by the 2D-C
PMS probe. The diode size for the 2D-C probe was 32 microns, giving a maximum
panicle size of 1024 microns for particles entirely in the beam. The right hand side of the
panel gives the shading scheme used to indicate concentrations of panicles less than a
given size. The middle panel gives the liquid water content measured by the Johnson-
Williams probe (solid line), and the vertical wind speed as determined from the aircraft
INS system (dashed line). The lower panel gives the dewpoint temperature (solid line)
and the reverse flow temperature (dashed line). The panicles shown below the time series
plot are from the 2D-C probe, and were sampled between the time periods indicated.

Figure 6
GMT.

Same as figure 5 except for December 8, 1985 between 1207 and 1227
