<br />Fig. 1 - Colorado River Basin Pilot Project Base Map. <br /> <br />The area above 2743 meters (9000 feet) is hatched. It delineates the <br />massif of the San Juan Mountains and the high areas to the north of the <br />Rio Grande. Snow accumulations most important to the water needs of the <br />West lie above this level. The target, or test area, covers but a small <br />fraction of the entire massif, which in turn covers but a small portion <br />of southwestern Colorado (see inset map). Most of the snowmelt from the <br />south and southwest slopes of the target runs off into the San Juan River <br />and its tributaries. Snowmelt from the north and northeast slopes runs <br />off into the Rio Grande River Basin. <br /> <br />Generator locations and snow gages are'also shown on the map. <br /> <br />-5- <br />
