<br />Fig. 4 - Rawinsonde. <br /> <br />This balloon-borne unit emits radio signals as it ascends at about 5 m/sec <br />over the Durango area, drifting northeastward toward the target in the <br />storm winds aloft. The signals convey to the ground receiver (see movable <br />antenna mounted on trailer) pressure, temperature, and humidity data at <br />intervals as the balloon ascends. The antenna locks on the signal" thus <br />yielding tracking data for use in calculating winds aloft from the balloon's <br />drift. <br /> <br />Rawinsonde ascents were made at three-hourly intervals day and night during <br />the active part of experimental days, and once daily at other times. <br /> <br />-13- <br />
