l

Fig. 3 - Recording Snow Gauge.

The gauge is charged with an antifreeze solution to insure melting of the
snow. The slatted wind shield insures proper flow over the gauge orifice
for collection of snow under high wind conditions. The recorder c.ylinder,
which contains a one-week time clock, is seen through the open door at the
base of the gauge.

Some of these gauges were located along Highway 160 over Wolf Creek Pass
and Highway 550 over Red Mountain Pass. The others were loc.ated in rugged
high level terrain and were accessible by over-snow vehicles.

l

-9-
