In the case of <br />TUS data, a linear relationship was particularly evident in temperature and, to a lesser extent <br />but more of interest, in wind speed, as indicated on figure 10. <br /> <br />The next step in the statistical analysis process consisted of searching for possible relationships <br />between HJ CLW measurements and sounding variables. First, plots were developed with CVR <br />information as independent variables. However, the HJ CLW was available in 15-min <br />averages, and because soundings were available at 3-h intervals or longer, averaging the CLW <br />data over a longer period was necessary. Application of the MLR with different time averages of <br />the CLW as the dependent variable, versus CVR sounding variables (independent variables), <br />led to selection of an averaging period that provided the higher multiple correlation value. <br />Chosen was the mean CLW for seven consecutive hours that were selected such that the middle <br />hour (of the 7-h period) corresponded to the sounding hour. The 7-h outcome means that in the <br />usual twice-per-day soundings format, 14 of a possible 24 h of CLW are included in analyses. <br />Hereafter, reference to HJ CLW will connote reference to the 7-h averages. <br /> <br />Each HJ CLW value represents the mean vertically integrated amount of CLW because the <br />vertically-pointing radiometer yields integrated values. Consequently, one does not know the <br />distribution of the CLW in the vertical profile. However, some previous radar and aircraft data <br />have shown that most of the CLW important to wintertime orographic cloud seeding generally <br />exists in the first kilometer above the surlace of a barrier. Over the Mogollon Rim, the center <br />point of the first kilometer is near the 750-mb level. Scatterplots generally revealed the <br />stronger linear relationships for tllat level. <br /> <br />" , <br /> <br />8 <br />
