.

IS

.

flowed through the tube, the grains trapped the liquid water droplets. The

amount of mass added to the tube determined the liquid water content of the

cloud air passing though the tube.

Seeding of fog in a 20-liter jug by metaldehyde initiated the growth

process of the crystal. After being injected into the vertical section of the

tunnel through an observation hole just above the honeycombs, the ice

crystals grew for time periods of up to 3 minutes in a flow whose upward

speed was gradually increased by slowly adjusting a control valve on the

suction line and a variac on the vacuum cleaner motor. As the crystal grew,

a chopped light beam technique provided the means for determining the fall

velocity.

At the end of the growth period, the suction was turned off and the

crystal was allowed to fall onto a slide coated with silicon oil that was denser

than the crystal. Then the cover slide, coated with motor oil, was placed over

the slide. Since the density of the motor oil was less than that of the crystal,

the crystal was trapped at the interface between the silicon oil and the motor

oil, and, thus, the crystal could be preserved at the interface indefinitely. The

mass and dimensions were then determined by methods employed by Fukuta

0%9).

The temperature and the liquid water content of the fog were measured

to be within the range of -5 and -21'C and 0.5 and 3.0 g/m3, respectively.

This amount of liquid water helped to ensure that water vapor was not

depleted to a pressure below water saturation. Mass was measured after 40, 70

and 140 seconds and the fall velocity was determined after 20, 60, 80, 100, 120

and 150 seconds of growth. However, no data on a- and c-axiallengths were

reported by the investigators since the methods used were said to have

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.
