7

t

IV. AIRCRAFT ANALYSES
The Cheyenne II aircraft was provided to the Utah program by Colorado

International Corporation. CSU participation in the reduction and analyses

of data collected by this aircraft consisted of two tasks. The first task

consisted of data reduction of field tapes. The second task was to i.ncorporate

these data into two case study analyses of priority storms occurring during the

field program.
A. Data Reduction

1. Calibration: A calibration flight was carried out prior to the

field program at the Boulder Atmospheric ObsE!rvatory tower near

Boulder, Colorado. The results of this calibration were incorporated

into the analysis program.

2. Data Processing: CSU received 18 field tapes from Colorado

International Corporation during the field program. In addition, five

tapes of aircraft navigation paramE~ters were received from the FAA.

Six tapes containing the complete state parameter and FSSP reduced

data sets for the program were generated from the original field tapes

after the software development pha8e was completed. Hardcopy of these

data were distributed to all participants on 21 July 1983. Copies of

final processed tapes were made available a short time 1atE!r. CSU also

performed extensive comparisons of the instruments used to measure

supercooled cloud water. Tabular compilation of all field and processed

data available to the project parti.cipants, tape documentation and samples

of outputs are contained in Appendi.x C. Results of the instrument

comparisons are contained in Section V.

3. Data Analysis: Two primary objectives were set for the 1983 analysis

of Cheyenne II aircraft data. These were to provide

a. Descriptions of the spatial and temporal distribution of

liquid water over various flight tracks.

~

.

'"
