.

.

.

Interactian with water resaurces managers at series of meetings with water aperatians managers,
river farecast centers, NOHRSC researchers, and ac:tive cammunicatians with water managers
is leading to' better understanding af the NEXRAD SWE products, and haw they may be integrated
intO' the aperatianal NOHRSC SNODAS system which will replace the Snaw water Equivalent
Updating System (SEUS).

In 2000-01 the project will perform the following talsks:

1. Callect and display radar SWE estimates far NOHRSC in near real-time far them to' merge with
ather data sets in develapment af gridded fields af SVIIE and snaw caver. (The first winter (1998-
99) af near real-time use af WSR-88D SWE estimates utilized the Chanhassen radar}.

2. Develaped a scheme to' merge (masaic) SAA radar-estimated SWE fields from several
adjaining radars and displayed these results fram 10 radars in real-time aver the Internet far
aperatianal farecasters (see aur web site: http://www.usbr.gav/rsmg under NEXRAD Praducts -
NEXRAD Snaw Algarithm Products).

3. Review progress in the applicatian af the SAA with NWS River Farecast Center (RFC) teams
at Chanhassen, MN and Pleasant Hill, MO to' detenmine mare explicit methads af using this
snawpack and water supply infarmatian.

4. Develap procedures to' apply NEXRAD data in thH Advanced Hydrolagic Predictian System
(AHPS) thraugh the SNODAS develaped by the NOHRSC.

5. Develap procedures to' evaluate the new SNODAS estimates af snaw water equivalent in
watersheds abave Reclamatian reservairs.

6. Present results af current wark at the Spring Meeting af the AGU (Matthews et aI2000c,d) and
ASCE Watershed Management 2000 Canference (Matthews et aI2000a), and Annual meeting
af the American Metearolagical Saciety.

Potential Links to the Advanced Hydrologic Predicjtion System

With the current develapment and implementation of the Advanced Hydrolagic Predictian System,
and its integratian with the Natianal Weather Service River Farecast System (NWSRFS), the
Missauri Basin RFC may be able to' use the NEXRAD SAA products directly. Meetings and
discussians were canducted with the Develapmental Operatianal Hydrolagist, RFC farHcastteams,
and Reclamatian's Upper Missauri Basin water aperat~ans managers in February 2000. Similar
discussians with the Natianal Operatianal Hydrolagic Remate Sensing Center (NOHRSC) are
cantinuing to' determine haw these data can be integrated directly intO' their Snaw Water
Equivalent Updating System (naw knawn as Snaw Water Data Assimilatian System (SNODAS)),
and then applied in the NWSRFS. Reclamatian's water managers use the RFC farecasts far
aperatianal decisian-making. These discussians will lead to' broader applicatians af GEWEX
research in the GEWEX Americas Predictian Program (GAPP) from FY02-07.

8
