airplane will be equipped with 20-gm flares with burning times of either
45 sec or 7 min. The initial amount of silver iodide released will be
240 gm within a period of 3 min. Adjustments in the amount and rate of
release will be made depending on observed ice crystal concentrations.
5.1.2 Cloud Top
Cloud-top seeding will be accomplished in growing cumulus clouds
in the -40C to -IOoC region by use of eiT~er the turbo-charged Navajo
aircraft or the Lear Jet. These airplanes will be equipped with racks
containing 30 gm silver iodide flares which may be dropped into the cloud
in any number desired. Initially, 5 flares per kilometer will be dropped
when seeding an individual growing cumulus cloud. This should result in
100 or more ice crystals per liter. The number of flares required will
depend upon the size of the cloud, the diffusion rates of the silver
iodide within the cloud, and 'the concentration of ice crystals measured
by the cloud physics aircraft. Adjustments in the number of flares
dropped will be made depending on ice crystal concentrations measured by
the cloud physics aircraft.
5.2 Convective (thunderstorm) Complex
5.2.1 Semi-Isolated
Growing turrets associated with a thunderstorm complex will be seeded
from on top by either the Lear Jet or the Navajo. Each turret seeded
and measured will be treated as an event in the same manner that a.n
individual growing cumulus cloud is treated. If more than one turret
associated with a given thunderstorm complex is seeded, each turret will
be treated in its entirety before the treatment of the next one begins.
During .June both the Navajo and the Lear Jet will be used for seeding
thunderstorm complexes, but during July these systems will be seeded by
use of the Navajo only. While emphasis will be given to on-top seeding
of growing turrets, a limited number of convective complexes will be seeded
at their bases. This seeding will be done by the Aztec with 400 gm of
silver iodide being released in a time interval of 7 min.
5.2.2 Lines
Turrets associated with lines of convective complexes will be
seeded from on top in the -40C to -lOoC range by use of the Navajo and
Lear Jet aircraft. The turrets associated with these systems will be
seeded in the same manner as those associated with individual convective
complexes and only from on top. Seeding of the turrets will be accomplished
along a flight track approximately 450 to the wind direction in order
15
