~

will be processed inunediately on th'a Bureau of Reclamation compubar and
entered in the archives. All other sounding data will be extracted from
the appropriate records, keypunched, and soundings computed at Texas A&M
and later archived in the Bureau of Reclamation computer in Denver.
3.2.3 Radar
Data will be collected by two radar systems, the FPS-77 located at
the Big Spring Municipal Airport (formerly Webb Air Force Base), and the
M-33 (3 and 10 cm) located at Snyder. All data for the FPS-77 will be
recorded either on forms prepared for the purpose or photographically. All
digital data collected by the M-33 ,."ill be recorded on magnetic tape for
later processing.
In addition to the FPS-77 and the M-33 radars, data also will be
obtained from the National Weather Service radar at Midland. These data
will serve to provide information on convective clouds adjacent to as
well as over the target area, and will serve as back-up data in the event
data from the other radars are lost due to instrumentation difficulties.
In addition, the 3 cm ATMOS-IV radar will serve as a back-up radar to the
FPS-77 if needed for this purpose.
3.2.4 Aircraft
A total of four aircraft will participate in the 1978 Texas HIPLEX
field program. These will consist of the Lear Jet provided by the Colorado
International Corporation for on-top seeding, a turbo-charged Navajo
supplied by the Colorado River Municipal Water District (CRMWD) for on-top
seeding, an Aztec also made available by CRMWD for base seeding and for
making cloud-base measurements, and a Navajo supplied by Meteorology
Research, Inc. for making cloud physics measurements. Variables measured
by the MRI Navajo are shown in Table 3.2.4.1. Variables measured by the
CRMWD Aztec will include temperaturE~, altitude, vertical air motion, drop
spectra (300-4500 ~), and humidity. Variables measured by the cro~ Navajo
will include temperature and vertical air motion. Cloud position informa-
tion will be recorded manually.
The CRMWD pilots will take several orientation rides in thE~ Lear
Jet for familiarization purposes early in the field program.
3.2.5 Satellite
Satellite data will be collected from the GOES Satellite ait: 30-min
intervals during each mesoscale operational day. These data will be
collected by Texas Tech University at the National Weather Servicla station
in Lubbock. Both visual and infrared photographs will be collectlad at
30-min intervals during each operational day.
8

..

~
