development of seeding methodologies. Other types of activities, such as

examination of cloud microphysical processes, may require further study at

each site because of known or suspected north-south gradients in cloud and

climatic properties.

The experimental design for HIPLEX is based on the recommendations of

the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) as presented in the ISWS Design

Document entitled, "Design of the High Plains Experi.ment with Specific Focus

on Phase 2, Single Cloud Experimentation," This doc:ument, dated June 30,

1976, is available from the Office of Atmospheric Re~sources Management (OARM)

in Denver, Colorado.

The HIP LEX design is of an evolving nature, As: knowledge increases,

it will be used to modify and upgrade the experiment: to optimize its learning

efficiency. HIPLEX ,.,ill be a three-phase experiment: under the present

concept. The first phase is of an exploratory nature leading to a better

understanding of natural precipitation processes and the design of a random-

ized seeding experiment for semi-isolated clouds and cloud complexes.

Activities of the 1978 season will be part of the first phase. The second

phase will be the actual conduct of the randomized seeding experiment which,

if successful, 'l1ill lead to the design of a wide-area seeding experiment.

The third and final phase would be the wide-area experiment which would

attempt to increase the net rainfall over several thousand square kilometers,

The 1978 Miles City field program will be diffE!rent in scope from the

1977 program. A very comprehensive high-quality data base was collected

during the 1976 and 1977 seasons; consequently, it is now possible to

place increased emphasis on various analyses and design efforts leading to

the final design for the randomized experiment scheduled to commence in the

summer of 1979. Aircraft sampling in 1978 will be limited to June and July,

1-2

"

e
