entire evolution of the precipitation process within the cloud from initial

ice crystal formation, to the subsequent transport of precipitation embryos

through the cloud, and their development into precipitation-sized particles.

Determination of the relation between the concentration of ice embryos and

concentration of graupels is of particular importance,

~

2. It is planned to test and refine procedures for real':"time convective

complex identification by radar. Ongoing analyses are developing criteria

for identifying convective complexes from radar data. The real-time applica-

tion of these criteria will be tested and r~fined, as needed, u~ing a new

color display of the radar PPI and "instant" color photography, The evolution

of radar echoes will be closely monitored so as to attempt to rapidly identify:

(1) newly formed convective complexes and (2) complE~xes that have evolved

into systems too large and complicated for continued treatment and/or sampling.

3. It is planned to test and refine procedures for the rapid identification

and treatment of towering cumulus and convective cotnplexes by the Learjet

seeding aircraft, and for fast turnaround when replenishing fuel and seeding

material. Included in the treatment tests will be determination of the

reliability of the dry ice dispenser. Identification will be based on a

combination of radar observations, laserfax satellite photos, and visual

recognition, although towering cumulus identification must often rely on

visual recognition alone,

Prompt treatment requires fast response after identification. Thus,

the seeding aircraft must be prepared for quick takE=off when a mission is

anticipated, and observing systems (visual, radar, and satellite) must be

monitored closely. Once a cloud system is chosen, the seeding aircraft will

1-6
