understanding of the physical processes responsible for winter precipitation development
in natural and seeded orographic clouds; and 4) to gain a better understanding of the
trajectories of natural and seeded precipitation particles in winter orographic clouds.
Section 2 of this report details the DRI efforts during the field program, while Section 3
summarizes the work completed during the contract period.

II. DRI Contributions to 1994 NOAA/Utah Field Operations

A. DRI Personnel
Mr. Arlen Huggins served as the Principal Investigator and monitored all aspects
of the DRI effort. He also operated the mobile radiometer and Ka-Band radar, and
contributed to rawinsonde training, data editing and archiving. Dr. Melanie Wetzel
organized the satellite and synoptic data collection, operated the mobile radiometer and
contributed the most to the collection of Ka-Band radar data. Mr. Richard Smith
maintained the radiometer system, including the initial deployment, calibration and system
testing. Mr. Paul Lage set up and calibrated the Ka-Band radar, and assisted in the
installation of new hardware and software for the data acquisition and antenna control
systems. The DRI trace chemistry laboratory, operated by Mr. Richard Stone, provided
the materials for collecting snow samples and a detailed set of instructions for the
procedures involved in time sequential sampling. Mr. Monte Stark of the Nevada State
Cloud Seeding Program helped install and test the two remote-controlled Agl seeding
generators on the Wasatch Plateau.

B. Significant Storm Periods
The analysis effort during the coming year will fully document the storm periods
during the 1994 field program. The following dates are those periods which had
significant weather and involved intensive data collection by project instrumentation.

3

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
