2.1.1

Dike West of Del Norte

Concern:

The dike on the south bank of the Rio Grande west of Del
Norte was partially breached during the peak of the flood. If
this dike were to fail. the town of Del Norte would sustain
considerable tlooding. A request was made to evaluate its
overall condition.

r"indinys:

This approximate 30 foot wide levee was part of a "Critical
Area 1'reatment" (CAT) sponsored by the Soil Conservation Service
(~CS) in the late 1970's. The material for the heavily riprapped
bank and levee is reported to have come from the Rio Grande Canal
Company (RGCC) quarry, which is nearby. The RGCC was apparently
the entity that managed construction with SCS funding. The
diversion structure for the Rio Grande Canal is located
approximately I mile north east of the site. The headgate of the
Del Norte Town ditch is located at the upstream end of the CAT.
Leakage through the embankment near the headgate was observed
during the inspection.

Erosion over approximately a length of 350 feet on the top
of the bank has removed from 2 to 5 feet (average 4.0 feet) off
the top of the levee. Floating debris has accumulated on the top
of the bank.

The volume of material removed is estimated to be about
4 x 30 x 350 = 1556 cubic yards.
27

Approximately half of the removed material appears to be
present on the site just east of the levee.

I

approx. 350 ~r 1

z' 5'

__1______________________,___________

t lkl Norfc
"",...."Ilkl,

SECTION ALONG LEVEE

27
