2.1.1 Alpine Village No.7

Concern:

Minor flooding occurred to existing homes and buildings on
the north bank of the Rio Grande River in Sections 25 and 30 of
T 40N. R 3E and R 4E. A discharge of 9040 c.f.s. put the river
just over the bank. A request was made to evaluate the area for
the possible need of a dike or dikes.

r"'indings:

A low levee approximately 3.000 feet long and an average of
4 feet high could be installed down the center of an existing
gravel public road parallel to the river maintained by the
county. In conjunction with this levee. approximately 800 feet
of the Gerrard Road from the bridge to the bluff north of the
bridge could be raised to elevation 8140. or even with the top of
the bridge. Raising the Gerrard Road would improve access to the
valley during floods. However. this action would have a negative
impact on existing homes west of the road. The alternative is to
run a 5 toot high levee approximately 1200 feet along the north
bank from the bridge to the road that runs along the bluff near
the inlet to the Highwater Ditch. A survey down the centerline
of the road would be required to accurately determine the volume
of material. Side slopes of 3 to 1 are recommended except at
driveways where 5 to 1 is recommended.

~'a~ra,<-
~
i*

.~ _.5"'::::- ar~~
- _ c"V""JI'J
----"'--

:zo'

I
or

,l

I
>-
.1

4-1

TYPICAL SEC''fION

The west end of the levee should tie into the existing
bridge abutment at Gerrard. The volume of the levee parallel to
the river downstream of the Gerrard Bridge is estimated at
44 x 4 x 3000 = 19.556 cubic yards. A minimum right-at-way 44
27
feet wide would be necessary.

21
