- 1 -

study all inflow to and outflow from the area were measured. Irrigation began

about May 10 and the ditches were closed about July l5. Diversions to the area

averaged 4.4 acre feet per acre for the three year period. It was determined that

the stream depletion due to the irrigation of the hay and pasture lands averaged

0.61 acre feet per acre during the three years. Stream flows were not sufficient

to allow the diversion of greater amounts of water than those which were applied

during the period.

While a comparison between results arrived at by the Blaney method, which

is based on experimental studies made in various sections of the West, and the

results from actual measurement of inflOt'T and outflow' may not be considered as

definitely conclusive, there is an indication in this case that had there been

sufficient diversion in the area for an adequate water supply for the crop,

there would have been an additional stream depletion of about 0.1 of an acre

foot per acre.

The Laramie River' basin in Colorado is adjacent to the North Park area

and similar to it with respect to elevation, climate, soils and irrigation

practices. r'G may therefore be reasonably assumed that with unlimited diversions

on the Laramie River to the lands there, '.'lhich have also had average diversions

since 1942 of about 4.4 acre feet per acre, the increase in stream depletion

would be at approximately the same rate as was indicated by the comparison

for North Park. This 1'lould mean an increase in depletion of 0.10 acre feet

per acre for the 3,645 irrigated acres on which it has been estimated that more

water would be applied, and 0.71 acre feet per acre' for the additional 160 acres

to which diversions have not been made in the 1942-l949 period. Under this

assumption the additional amount of stream depletion would be about 480 acre
