12 WATER AND CHOICE IN THE COLORADO BASIN

A SPARSE BUT RAPIDLY INCREASING POPULATION

Much of the Colorado basin is almost uninhabited (Figure 4). Although
it includes 6.7 percent of the national area, the basin contains only about
1.3 percent of the national population. Large portions of the lower basin
are desert, and in these, human life could not be maintained without the
water of the Colorado River system.

Los
Angeles

I

I

T';1
I-'~:'t'

I

00 Denver

....~...
:":ftJ~~: 00

. :..:;0: .

COLORADO

-'0:":: Albuquerque

NEW MEXICO

. 20,000 people, 1966.
_ Boundary of Colorado basin.

FIGURE 4 Population distribution, Colorado River basin and adjacent areas.
