e

These profi 1 es will be anal yzed and compared with the prec:i pitat ion
record at the CSSL (Central Sierra Snm~ Laboratoy'y) to develop a formula
for later use in operational and ecological mon'itoring and research on
the effect of weather modification in the American River Basin.

Work will continue this season on monitoring and eva1uationlJOdels to
estimate snow water content and snowpack conditions at various eleva-
tions for a winter orographic cloud seeding project. A model will also
be developed to estimate, after seediing, what the condition of Basin
snowpacks wo.u1 d have been had no seedi ng occurred.

2. Baseline Water Quality Monitoring

e

A water qual ity monitori ng program will be imp1 emented by the SCPP.
Cooperative arrangements have been made with the Bureau's Mid-Pacific'
Region and the U.S. Geological Survey to collect monthly samples frOOl
sites in the project area. There are eight sites in the American River
Basin, one in the Yuba Basin, and probably three in the Tahoe Basin.
Samples will be analyzed for silver, cesium, nitrogen, phosphorus,
aluminum, and total dissolved solids. Samples will be taken monthly
starting in October or November and continue until July 1984.

3. Mountain Hemlock and Subalpine Meadows Monitoring

e

A study of snow/forest interaction will be continued as part of the SEP.
The U.S. Forest Service, in cooperation with the University of Nevada,
is establising or installing seven monitoring sites across the American
River Basin, Lake Tahoe Basin, and Carson Range to closely observe
certain forest species over the course of the SCPP experiments.

1-27
