Evidenc~ from the 1982-83 field season and other seasons lends strength
to the thought that on1 y certain port ions of the general orographic/
area-wide precipitation occurring in Sierra storms may be seedab1e. A
concerted effort will be made to identify these storm periods uti1 izing
aircraft, radar, rad iometer, and ground-based microplnys i ca1 observa-
t ions. Simi 1 arit ies in the synopt ic/mesosca1 e featur1es observed when
large amounts of liquid water are present will be established to aid in
our forecasting of these events.

e

3 . Can we fin a 1 i z e a S C P P - 2 des i g n for ran d om i zed see din g 0 f
orographic/area-wide precipitation?

To the extent we are able to answer question 2 above, WE! will be able to
answer thi s quest ion. There are several questions concern ing target
area size, targeting abi1 ity and sensitivity of instrumentation to see
the seeding effects that are of major concern before final izi ng a
design. Observations during 1983-84 are specifically aimed at these
problems.

e

4. Can we support and beg in eva1 uating a meaningful ground seeding
experiment (SCPP-2A)?

SMUD has been conducting ground-based seeding in the southern ARB for
several years. They will continue such operations dur'ing the 1983-84
field season in cooperation with the Bureau seeding operations. Supple-
mental radar, rawinsonde, precipitation and some aircriift data will be
taken during SMUD seeding events between December and April 1. SMUD
will perform a ~andomized experiment using their ground generator

e

1-24
