e

segments through the seedable region and to follow the seeding

effect vertically and horizontally in time. Seeding material
/~;C
will be released in a curtain from the -8 .C level down to near
1:;. (7 p--
o .C.

It is not known how large a volume of cloud will be affected by

seeding a short curtain in a seedable region. If this can be

determined during these calibration trials, then procedures can

be developed for seeding larger volumes of cloud to affect the

projected SCPP target area during the exploratory experiment.

3. What procedures will be necessary to coordinate forecasts,

aircraft operations, radar operations, evaluation procedures,

randomization schemes, seeding, and other support activities

e

during the exploratory experiment?

The preliminary studies conducted during the past two seasons

required extensive coordination in order to optimize the number

and quality of measurements. However, the only meteorological
constraint was making sure all of the groups observed a given
precipitation episode. Classification of storm types, cloud
types, etc., was completed after the fact. The exploratory
experiment will not require the forecast of a cloud type or storm
type per se, but the procedures for identifying and declaring
experimental units based on cloud type and/or storm type and

placing the observation systems will be considerably more complex

e

1-32
