ClL4.PTER II. METEOROLOGICAL STUDIES

A. "PROBE" MESONET PREPARATION

1. EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES

a. PROBE Equipment

I.
d

The PROBE mesonet platforms and associated equipment were delivered to the
DNRC RIPLEX headquaters in different quantities over approximately 15 months.
Also, the quantities of various platform equipment were not always the same
within an individual delivery. A close accounting of the inventory had to be
maintained to assure that sufficient numbers of instruments were available for
field operations. Cataloguing of the equipment was maintained by model and
serial numbers. The location of field instruments was registered with a card
catalogue; with each reassignment and transfer of a particular instrument, the
card catalogue was updated.

For the CCOPE field program the number of PROBE platforms and associated
equipment that was available for deployment during some interval of CCOPE field
preparations or operations is listed in Table 11.1. Some of the numbers listed
in Table 11.1 includ,e PROBE equipment that may have passed through DNRC
possession or been non-functional during CCOPE preparation or operations.

b. Storage and Lab Wacilities

Workshop and lab facilities were needed to perform the routine calibration,
maintenance, trouble shooting and repair exercises. Sheltered storage area~
for all instruments and tools required about 450 m2 both before and after field
operations.

Vehicle parking and outdoor storage was needed beyond the 450 m2 area.
DNRC leased approximately 7000 m2 of land to locate lab, workshop, stor.age and
parking facilities. An electronics lab was set up in a 3- by l7-m mobile home
for calibration and repair. Another mobile home was used for basic workshop
and storage. The lab and workshop facilities were interconnected for
convenient access.

c. Service Instruments and Equipment

Service equipment and tools were necessary for lab and field operations.
Major service equipment are listed in Table II.2. Not all of the equipment in
Table 11.2 was fully functional for the entire field season and therefore,
spares of various items were required as indicated by the quantities.

2. PERSONNEL

a. Recruitment

Personnel to manage and perform the activities of PROBE mesonet operations
were specifically mobilized for CCOPE. National recruitment was conducted to
secure the proper personnel for software design, conversion and production. In
addition, extensive recruitment for electronic technicians and field assistants
was conducted to assemble an effective field operations staff (Table 11.3).

5
