SUPPLEMENTARY NOTES
Microfiche and/or hard copy available at the Engineering and Research
Center, Denver, Colorado
Editor: EJH
16. ABSTRACT A statlstlcal summary of thermodynamic features generally consid-
ered relevant to convective cloud development and the dynamic seedi n9 hypo-
thesis, as diagnosed by a one-dimensional, steady-state model, was compiled
for selected High Plains locations. The summary is based primarily on ra-
winsonde data observed at MLS (Miles City, Mont.), GLD (Goodland, Ka ns. ) ,
and BGS (Bis Spri ng , Tex. ) , during the summer months of 1975-77, as part of
HIPLEX (High Plains eooperative Proqram). Data were stratified accordinq tc
the occurrence or nonoccurrence of convective clouds and, when clouds occur-
red, accordinq to cloud type as seen in geosynchronous satellite imaqery.
Geoqraphic comparisons show significant variations from north to south over
the High Plains--the most intense convection occurrinq in the central and
southern plains, the least intense in the north. Laroe annual variations
were noted i n mea n values of the thermodynamic features at each site amonq
the three summers. Mesoscale variability analyses of the thermodynamic fea-
tures show large spatial variations within an 80-km rawinsonde network. The
DMP (dynamic modification potential) diaonosed by the cloud model is strati -
fied by satellite-observed cloud types and mesoscale structures. DMP values
larger than 2 km were found in 50 nercent of the soundinos analyzed. DMP
predicted by the model is shown to occur when stable layers between -5 and
-15 oc 1 eve 1 s tend to inhibit natural convective cloud 9rowth.
17.
