of Miles City. Soundings were collected in Montana from May to August.
At Goodland, Kansas, and Big Spring and Midland, Texas, observations were
taken from May to September.

During 1977, special HIPLEX soundings were also observed at Billings,
Montana, about 115 km west-southwest of Miles City to study conditions in
the vicinity of mountain-generated convective clouds and storms. Soundings
were collected from May to August in Montana. Special mesoscale rawin-
sondes were collected for the Goodland HIPLEX site to study the generation
and propagation of convective systems from the central Colorado Rockies to
western Kansas. These soundings were collected at Limon and South Park,
Colorado, from July to mid-August 1977 (Danielson et al., 1978). Goodland
and Big Spring soundings were collected from May to September.

The GPCM model was initialized using soundings from these data sets on
days when satell ite observations of cloud types were avail abl e in 1976 and
1977. Care was taken that only one sounding per day was analyzed to
determi ne frequency of occurrence when severa 1 soundi ngs were obs, erved on
one day (tables 2, 7, 8, and 9).

b. Satell ite Observations

Geosynchronous satellite imagery observed at local noon (1800 G.m.t.) and
late afternoon (2300 G.m.t.) were collected in 1976 and 1977. These data
provided 2-km resolution visible images of the HIPLEX field sites. This
imagery was received from the National Environmental ,Satellite Service,
Satellite Field Service Station in Kansas. City, ~1issouri, continuously
during the HIPLEX field season. Daily analyses of the imaqery were per-
formed for the reqion within 250 km of each field site (Matthews, 198Gb)..

5
